During the early weeks of December, the Kitzbühel Alps region is suffused with festive spirit. Kirchberg and Kitzbühel are prime destinations for discovering the authentic Tyrolean Advent. The Relais & Châteaux Rosengarten Hotel is also where you will find Simon Taxacher, perhaps Austria’s best chef, whose cuisine has been awarded toques, stars, cooking spoons, bottles and crowns alike. Add to this the charming Rosengarten SPA and upscale 5-star accommodation, and your Advent break is complete!
Advent in the mountains
Picturesque Kirchberg, with the famous Gaisberg and breathtaking landscape on the doorstep, is the perfect setting for the traditional Christmas market in Kirchberg’s village square. As always, there will be the Santa’s post office, mulled wine around the fire, local specialities and an abundance of festive gift ideas. When the band strikes up at 4pm on 10 December, the children’s excitement reaches fever pitch as they wait for Santa Claus to pass by in his carriage at 4.30pm and distribute gifts.
Kitzbühel Christmas market
Only seven kilometres from Kirchberg, visitors young and old find Kitzbühel’s Christmas market; another great spot for getting into the festive spirit with roasted almonds, mulled wine and delicious Tyrolean specialities. There is so much for children to discover, from the campfire with forest ranger Cornelia Miedler to Christmas stories at Museum Kitzbühel and the animals at the petting zoo, where little ones can even enjoy a pony ride.
The smaller-scale events in neighbouring areas are also well worth a visit. There is the ‘Himmlischer Advent’ event at the Rasmushof at the end of the famous Hahnenkamm slope. Or perhaps you would prefer the walkable advent calendar in Reith near Kitzbühel, where a new window is opened every day until Christmas Eve. The same tranquil, mountain Advent atmosphere can be found in Jochberg, where private hosts invite visitors into their homes for a taste of Tyrolean Christmas traditions.
